Madison, Illinois (August 27, 2017) – Victor Franzoni picked up his fifth win of the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires in Round 10 of the inaugural run at Gateway Motorsports Park. Teammate Jeff Green earned a Top-5 finish taking fifth in the St. Louis Pro Mazda Oval Challenge Presented by Cooper Tires.

The short weekend began with one practice session on the 1.25 mile oval. Franzoni (Sao Paulo, Brazil) posted the second quickest time and Green (Peoria, Illinois) finished sixth.

The following day the Pro Mazda series continued with qualifying on the final oval of the season. Franzoni, driving the #23 Juncos Racing car, narrowly missed the pole and would settle for the second starting position. Green, driving the #60 Juncos Racing car, posted a strong sixth, earning his best qualifying position of the season.

Round 10 of the championship concluded the weekend at Gateway Motorsports Park. Green did not have the start he hoped for when he spun going into Turn-2 after the green flag waved. He was able to recover and went to the back of the pack. Green then charge his way through the field, even going three-wide with less than two laps to go, posting the third fastest lap and finishing a strong fifth. Franzoni, who was battling with championship point’s leader Anthony Martin, took the lead on lap 19 and would go on to lead the final 36 laps and win on the final oval race of the season. Franzoni also earned the fastest lap of the race and enough points to regain the lead in the championship.

Franzoni now leads the championship by two points going into the finale next weekend at Watkins Glen International Raceway.

“So the weekend went really well for us,” said Franzoni. “We really didn’t expect to leave here leading the championship again. We didn’t run well here during the test a few weeks ago and in practice we were not as quick as we wanted to be. Before the race we made some big changes and everything worked out really well. Juncos Racing did a great job figuring out a good set up for the race. Now we are leading the championship so it was much more than we expected. I am really happy and confident for Watkins Glen next week. We will keep working the way we have been, race by race, and not thinking about the championship.”

Teammate Green said “This was my very first oval I’ve ever competed on. The track has just been repaved, it is gorgeous, but it is complicated. On lap two I spun out and I went all the way to the back of the pack, worked myself through the pack, passed a few people and ended up with fifth place.”

Team Owner Ricardo Juncos said “We finished one of the most intense weekends as a team in both series. Winning the race with Victor Franzoni in Pro Mazda was absolutely amazing, we didn’t expect that, to be that fast, and to be that consistent. He made an incredible pass on Anthony Martin on the outside through Turn-1 and 2 and finished the pass on the outside in Turn-4, where it is not easy to pass. Victor made it look so easy, which shows me what a great talent he is and how much potential he has in his career. Jeff (Green) did a great job all weekend. He had a great qualifying effort and even though the start of the race did not go as planned for him, he was able to put on a great race. He (Green) laid down the third fastest lap and finished fifth which was an incredible moment for him and has shown how far he has come along this season. I would like to thank all the crew for their hard work and Ernie (Ernesto Gonella) our Technical Director and Emanuel Talquenca our Pro Mazda Engineer for giving the drivers a car with a great race set up. We had a lot of work to do this week before we head to the final race weekend, so we will work hard and keep ourselves focused on each of the last two races.”
The 2017 Pro Mazda Championship concludes this weekend September 1-3 with Rounds 11 and 12 at Watkins Glen International Raceway.
